Carrick raises €8,000 for GOAL

Carrick-on-suir’s fifth annual Christmas Goal Mile raised a staggering €8,000 this year for the charity which works to help the poorest of the poor around the world.

Organiser of the event Margaret Power said that she was delighted with the result of the Christmas morning walk, and said that it was among the highest ever raised for the annual festive walk. A special word of thanks was expressed to the Carrick-on-Suir Lions Club for their contribution.

The event involves members of the Carrick Road Runners and volunteers who give of their time on Christmas eve, fundraising at different locations around the town, followed by the walk itself on Christmas morning. Thankfully this year’s event came and went without the slippery, if beautiful, carpet of snow and ice that was there last year.

Karen O’Shea, daughter of John O’Shea, founder of Goal, said that she was ‘astonished at the generosity of the people of Carrick, considering the tough economic climate in Ireland for many people at present’. She said that she knew that Ireland and the Irish people were in the news recently for being amongst the most generous and charitable in the world but the amount of money raised this Christmas in Carrick-on-Suir was ‘simply outstanding’.

Carrick Road Runners Club chairman, James Fox, thanked all who helped with both the Goal Mile event and also the street collection for Goal on Christmas eve. He especially thanked committee member Margaret Power who has organised the event every year and also paid tribute to her husband Bobby, who sadly passed away during the year, and who was also very involved in the event from the beginning.

Some energetic and enthusiastic people ran around the one-mile route, but the vast majority of the 200 strong crowd opted for a brisk walk on the beautifully mild Christmas morning, and returned to the Main Street for some welcome refreshments.
