WiFi still on track for Clonmel

Clonmel is still on track to becoming a WiFi town by the end of January despite a slight delay in progress experienced towards the end of 2011.

CEO of the Clonmel Chamber of Commerce, the organisation behind the drive to make Clonmel one of the first WiFi towns in Ireland, said that the initial plan was to have WiFi rolled out by December but this had to be put on hold as work was being done on a building which will act as the main access point for the WiFi signal.

“We announced it last September, it was to be finished by December but we expect it to be complete by the end of January,” said Mr. Cleary.

“Because of work that was ongoing on the main building that will bounce the wireless signal, we could not go ahead with it,” he said.

The move, when complete, will be a hugely beneficial one for town, for business, tourism and for those living in the town, Mr. Cleary agreed.

“It will encourage more businesses to advertise online, sell online and generate new business.

“It will be great for people coming to the town and living in the town as they will be able to surf the web while having a coffee, they can take pictures and upload them instantly,” said Mr. Cleary.

With Clonmel confirmed as a WiFi hotspot, it will undoubtedly help to attract people to the town where smart device users can enjoy free internet access while there and with a Clonmel-specific landing page popping up on users’ screens they will be able to learn all about Clonmel and what it has to offer them.

Clonmel Chamber’s WiFi landing page is currently being deigned by local company Digital Orchard, owned by Hugh O’Carroll.

WiFi information signs will be erected in the town when the initiative is complete. The South Tipperary Development Company provided 75% of the funding required for the WiFi initiative, while Clonmel Chamber of Commerce provided the remaining 25%.\
