Tribunal gravy train needs to be derailed
The ‘tribunal gravy train’ needs to be derailed, according to South Tipperary TD Mattie McGrath.
South Tipperary Independent TD Mattie McGrath has again called for the cessation of such tribunals after details of costs were published in the media earlier this week.
“I have on numerous occasions called for the Mahon Tribunal to be disbanded due to the obscene waste of tax-payers money with very little results and I am absolutely appalled at the detailed costs that have been published today which report that this tribunal has cost the State almost €97 million to date.”
“This is a complete gravy train for the legal representatives and the figures released just go to prove that when almost €50 million has been paid in legal fees to barristers and solicitors and a further €30 million has been spent on “administrative costs” alone. There is absolutely no need for judges’ lunches to be paid for when many of them were being paid more than €1,700 a day. This is appalling,” he said.
“I am once again calling on the Government to disband the tribunal and to take every step to ensure that tax payer’s money is not wasted in such an outrageous way in the future.”
