Carers fear cuts to home help hours

threatened cuts of 500,000 home help hours puts family carers under more pressure, according to Clonmel manager of the Carers Association Richie Molloy, following the recent publication of the Health Service Executive’s (HSE) National Service Plan 2012.

The Carers Association is fearful of the extra stress and pressure that this will place on Ireland’s already over-burdened family carers to cover this shortfall.

Home help hours give family carers a much needed break from their often round-the-clock caring role and the Carers Association has been inundated with queries and worries expressed by carers across South Tipperary who are hugely fearful of how these cuts will impact on their lives, according to Mr Molloy.

“While the organisation welcomes Government’s shift in focus from residential care to home care provision, there is no clear strategy provided outlining how this will be achieved,” said Mr Molloy.

Mr Molloy said these cuts make no logical sense as family carers will end up being ‘burned out’ and the cared for person will end up in long term care with huge cost implications. Mr Molloy who is also a local public representative is calling on the Government to recognise this fact and is asking his colleagues on the local authorities who are members of the government parties in both Fine Gael and Labour to make their concerns known to the Minister for Health of how serious this threatened cuts are for the family carers in South Tipperary.
