The Swiss Cottage Celebrates 200th Anniversary
On Saturday 17th July Dr. Martin Mansergh TD and Chairman of the OPW, Claire McGrath joined Head Guide, Patricia Hassett and staff of The Swiss Cottage to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the building of the magnificent cottage.
There were demonstrations of traditional crafts on site including thatching, the making and use of lime-based mortars and renders, decorative plasterwork, stone carving, copper artwork,
willow basket making and handmade wallpaper.
Coillte, who recently received an award for the yew woodland renewal programme, part of which is located in Cahir Park and incidentally where the Swiss Cottage is located, hosted informative guided woodland walks during the day. As the woodland is home to a wide range of birds, Kevin Collins of BirdWatch Ireland gave a talk about their habitats and migration patterns.
The Southern Regional Fisheries Board / Inland Fisheries' had a live display of the fish, macro invertebrates, plants and insects which are present in the River Suir and lots of information leaflets and posters.
Angling displays and tutoring were available in conjunction with Cahir Anglers' Association. They also had lots of up to date fishing gear to view.
The day remained warm and sunny as many local people, tourists and families (some with picnics in tow) came to view the Cottage and amble around the beautiful gardens. With woodland and river walks too, it certainly was a most enjoyable day. It is very easy to forget what a beautiful gem we have here in Cahir in the form of The Swiss Cottage.
As I was leaving and that was only a little after 3pm already almost a 1000 people had come to visit. Congratulations to all for a very successful day.
Tidy Towns Closing Date Beckons?
The Cahir Tidy Towns group have been busy recently with litter picking throughout the town. As this was a very useful exercise we will meet again next Wednesday evening in the Car Park at the Castle to do a blitz of the southern side of the Town. Anyone wishing to join us is more than welcome.
This week’s heavy maintenance saw the laying of kerbs in the flowerbeds of Tobar Iosa and we are grateful to Corbett Concrete for their generous sponsorship of the kerbs.
The week was a busy one for the group after the Cahir go Leir festival. We also completed painting of the railings around the Tourist office and steps.
The ducks have nearly all been released and the geese will be on the river shortly. People are asked to respect these animals and don’t be afraid to feed them the odd piece of bread.
Reminder; the closing date for the Dolan Super Valu Tidy Town local Competition is July 23rd. Entry Forms are available from the County Council Offices.
Afternoon Tea Fund Raiser
A Garden Walk and Afternoon Tea will take place in the home of Nancy and David Walsh, Ballylomasna, Ballylooby, on Sunday 25th July.
The evening is in aid of Fr. Peter McGarry Trust which aids the homeless.
All are welcome and your support would be appreciated.
Trip to Scarborough 2010
The flights for the Cahir /Scarborough Trip this October will be booked on the Friday 30th July. Anyone with deposits paid will have to confirm their intention to travel or not by then. Those not able to go on the trip will have their money refunded in full and those travelling will have to send on their passport details to Andy Moloney or Tim Shanahan by that date. These will be needed for the booking process.
The dates are Friday 29th October to Monday 1st October and €100 per head is required to book. Please contact Andy on 086-3609110 or call to the Tim at the Enterprise Centre to confirm either way.
The reason for the change of date is that there are athletes from Poulmucka running in the Scarborough 10k Run and the date of that event had been changed.
Cahir Cubs
The 7th Tipp Cahir Cubs & Leaders would like to express their gratitude toeveryone who assisted with events and demonstrations over the last few months.
A special thanksto Donal Lonergan, Paramedic and his Team who provided a fantastic and detaileddisplay for all the cubs in first-aid procedures. It was a very enjoyable and informative night for all cubs in attendance and the procedures may even be made use of in time to come!
We would also like to thank most sincerely Redmond Williams for his time, effort and patience during his "Bee Keeping" information night which went down a storm with both cubs and leaders. His most impressive display and array of bee-keeping equipment keptall cubs fascinated throughout the evening, topping it off with each cub being able to hold a live, new-born honey bee was a moment of huge excitement for all.
Again, many thanks to all who gave their time and input to 7th Tipp Cahir Cubs, hopefully they will be willing to help out again in the future.
Crazy Boat Race
As you have probably seen, posters went up late last week to advise everyone of a new date set for the Crazy Boat Race which is sponsored by Dolans Supervalu. The race had to be cancelled at last minute during the Cahir go Leir Festival due to high and therefore dangerous water in the river.
The Committee has decided on the date of Sunday 1st Augusts to carry out the race and can only hope that between now and then that the rain stops and water levels come down again. It is our intention to have a similar Field Day as the original Funday Sunday with live Music, hopefully even more stalls (just call me for details), children’s entertainment and BBQ too, but with the exception of the Dog Show. But, please watch this space for any changes due to weather and the river. More details next week.
Cahir Active Retirement Association
Last Wednesday 14th July the group had an early start on their summer outing. Our first destination was Foto Island Park and Foto House. Both proved to be most interesting. We moved on to Cobh and had a choice of visiting the heritage centre or a boat trip around the harbour. After relaxing with light refreshments we took a leisurely drive to Kinsale for our evening meal in the epicurean centre of Ireland. We would like to thank Seamus Mulcahy and his lovely daughter for a safe, informative and interesting trip.
Plans are afoot for our next outings to Northern Ireland, the banquet at Bunratty Castle and Spain.
Information regarding Cahir Active Retirement Association may be obtained by contacting the Secretary at cahiractiveretirement@gmail.com or by phone 052 74 441892.

New Community Lotto
On the subject of the local lotto, Cahir Development Association is pleased announce that they are making some changes to the Community Lotto which they hope will be better for the Community and also for those who act as agents, selling tickets.
The changes are as follows-
The selection of number is now from 1-30 instead of 1-26.
Match 3 winners will share €200 per week instead of Lucky Dips sharing €150 per week.
Jackpots will now restart at €3000 after being won instead of €1000.
Jackpots, when not won will have €250 added each week instead of €150.
Sellers of the Winning Jackpot Ticket will now receive €100 instead of €65.
But perhaps the most exciting change is the introduction of the All New, Spin the Wheel.
All Match 3 winners each week will qualify for a ticket to the Monthly Spin The Wheel, which will be moved around from Pub to Pub each month. On the night, one ticket will be drawn from the Match 3 winners present and the winner will get the chance to Spin The Wheel for a prize. They will win anything from the lowest amount on the wheel, being €100, right up to the Star Prize which is €5000.
The launch of the new Spin The Wheel took place last week in Duneske Leisure Centre, where all agents were invited to participate in a draw to spin the wheel for the first time. Cahir GAA won the draw to spin the wheel and they scooped €300. Congratulations to them.
Lastly, new tickets have been issued to all agents and remember that you can now pick numbers from 1-30 instead of 1-26. Good luck to all.

Epic Youth Theatre
I have heard that the play that took place on Saturday 10th July in The Parochial Hall was a great success. Called The School, it was adapted for the stage by Jennifer Davis and had a running time of about 15 minutes.
It was a great addition to the festival and I only hope that there will be another play for next year’s festival. Well done Jennifer, keep up the good work.
Memory Bike Run
A Memory Motorbike Run will take place on Sunday 8th August. It will start at 12 noon at The Punters Rest and is in aid of South Tipp Hospice. The Run is in memory of the late John O’Brien of Cahir who died tragically in an accident a year ago and consequently takes place on the anniversary of his birthday. Please support this worthy cause.
Best Wishes
Best wishes to Sgt Peter Butler of Cahir Garda District, who retired last week after 32 years service. A reception was held for Peter in Cahir House Hotel to mark the occasion. Several colleagues and peers spoke of Peter’s dedication to his work, his involvement in many local projects and the level of commitment to his position. It was clear he will be missed by all who know him. Good luck to Peter and his family from your many friends and colleagues in Cahir.
Good luck from me too Peter.
Happy Birthday
A belated happy birthday goes to Cath Fitzpatrick (Mrs. Boc!) who celebrated her birthday last Sunday 18th July. Best wishes from Boc, all your family and many friends.
