Bottleneck and junctions are tackled under €10m funding

By Bernie Commins

Significant funding has been secured which will tackle a number of road safety concerns in Clonmel town.

Under the 2012 Regional and Local Roads Allocations, announced this week, in excess of €10m has been allocated for South Tipperary roads, but a notorious bottleneck in Clonmel, will be no more thanks to funding of €675,000 under the scheme. The Fethard Road Railway Bridge, which is a daily thorn in the side of commuters travelling to or from town, using this route, will be widened to ease traffic flow and increase safety in the area for drivers and pedestrians. An agreement has been reached between Clonmel Borough Council and Iarnrod Eireann for work to commence on the bridge as soon as possible, according to Mayor of Clonmel Cllr Darren Ryan who has welcomed the funding that will solve a major problem that has repeatedly been raised at Clonmel Borough Council meetings. The works will provide an additional traffic lane as you travel from the N24 inner relief road, taking the first exit off the Fethard Road roundabout and onto the bridge. And nearby, at the junction of Thomas Street and Prior Park Road, a roundabout will also be built, again to ease traffic flow and make it easier for drivers. “This is a route that I take everyday myself, and from about 4.15pm to 6pm each day, whether you are coming from Thomas Street or Prior Park you are queuing for a very long time,” said Mayor Ryan.

“This has been an issue since I was first elected back in 2004 so I welcome the progress that has been made with Iarnrod Eireann and the council in getting it sorted.”

He said that Clonmel Borough Council would be putting this project out to tender very soon and work will commence in the Spring. While he acknowledged that the works will cause some disruption for people, he said that people will be kept updated at all times, adding that such a project will be hugely beneficial when complete.
