Landy calls for rural transport assistance
the loss of a vital transport service from Mullinahone to Clonmel was raised recently in the Seanad by Carrick-on-Suir Senator Denis Landy, who is calling on Government to intervene in preventing the loss to rural areas of essential services. The private bus service, which catered for many people who otherwise, had no other means of transport to Clonmel, had to cease operation because it proved uneconomical for the service providers.
Senator Landy has called for a new initiative from Government to provide funding towards the cost of such a private service to private operators who are faced with the challenge of an uneconomical route.
“I have called on the Department of Transport to look at this issue as part of the overall review of rural transport that is currently being carried out and I have been given a commitment that this issue will form part of the review process,” said Senator Landy.
“I hope that funding will be made available to assist private operators to continue and indeed to create new bus routes in areas that are not served by any existing service and that this route can be looked at again in the future after the rural transport review is completed.”
It is expected that the Review of Rural Transport will be completed in the coming months and that issues such as this one highlighted by Senator Landy will be positively addressed.
