International musicians to compete in Tipperary song contest

Tipperary Town will play host to songwriters and performers from the USA, Germany, England, Scotland, Northern and Republic of Ireland this June as they compete in the grand final of the Tipperary International Song of Peace contest. Ten songs have been selected from a total of several hundred entries, to compete in the prestigious contest that will take place in the Tipperary Excel on the June Bank Holiday weekend. The Song of Peace final is one of a number of events being hosted by the Tipperary Peace Convention, which also includes the presentation of the Tipperary International Peace Award to Afghan Human Rights Activist, Dr. Sima Samar. For some of the Song of Peace finalists it will be their first time to make it to the final of an international song writing competition while for others it will be another significant achievement in their song writing careers.

The following are the 2011 Song of Peace finalists:

-Though born and raised in England, home for David Walmsley is now Dublin, Ireland. Performing under the name Hanlon (which is his mother’s maiden name) his song ‘For Each Other’ features the Choir of the Redeemed Christian Church of God on backing vocals.

-Kimberley Bointon from Peterborough in England is lead singer with Intwined, a dynamic folk/rock. Their music is unique, with many of their tracks written about real-life experiences of the band members. Her entry in the contest is titled ‘Zachariah’.

-Northern Irish singer/songwriter Chris Keys from Belfast is no stranger to the stage as has been performing for years as a solo artist. He has had appearances on Balcony TV, Blast FM and

Bandwagon TV and has had a number one in the Northern Ireland chart with ‘City Lights’. His entry in the Song of Peace is titled ‘New Day’.

-Gerald O’Dowd from Woolwich in South East London regards song writing and poetry as being the biggest passions in his life. He is a life long fan of Bob Marley and his entry in the contest is titled ‘Children of the World Unite’.

-Lissa-Käthe Rummery, is an Australian born composer/songwriter who now lives in Edinburgh, Scotland. She recently released her five-track debut EP ‘Reach You’ and is currently working on an album for 2011. Her song ‘Earth Spun’ is about

living in harmony and unity and the peace that brings to our world.

-Ireland and Germany are collaborating with an entry titled ‘Seeds of Love and Peace’. Buddy Sutton from Waterford City, has been writing lyrics and poems for over fifteen years. He has had two books of poems published and has signed a publishing deal with his songs in Nashville USA and England. He met Anke Zohm from Germany in 2009 and together they have co-written several songs.

-County Down songwriter Ken Warke has been writing songs for about 20 years and has had 12 published and recorded in various albums and song books. He had three songs in the semi finals of the UK Song Contest in 2008 and also reached the final of the North Down Song Contest in Bangor in 1995. His entry titled ‘Love is everything’ will be performed by well known Tipperary singer, Margi Maxwell.

-Bernadette Ruddy from Mayo grew up in a house that was steeped with music and song. She has toured with Brendan Grace and performed all around the country as well as in London, Manchester and New York. Bernadette is highly regarded for her distinctive singing voice and her capacity to squeeze every emotion out of a song. Her song entry is titled ‘It is You’.

-Returning to the contest this year is Carmina duo, Pippa Marland and Rob King from Nottingham, England. Carmina blend together elements of folk, jazz and Irish music into a unique kind of Celtic soul. They have toured all over the world playing at festivals such as Glastonbury, Cork Jazz, Sydney St Patrick’s Day Parade and the World Fleadh. Their song in the final is titled ‘There’s a Place’.

-From Kentucky in the USA comes Andrea Davidson. She has played well over 1,000 shows ranging from clubs to festivals and theatres. She has toured extensively and recently completed a musical residency in Santa Monica California. From her vast catalogue of original compositions a song entitled ‘Natchez Trace’ has been chosen as one of the finalists.
