Bulmers to feature on ‘Home Chef’

Clonmel Cider giant Bulmers is to feature in tonight’s episode of top chef Neven Maguire’s RTE TV show ‘Home Chef’ (Thursday February 2, 8.30pm).

Bulmers factory and orchards will be a focus of tonight’s show which is one of the most viewed food programmes on television.

The show will see Neven travel to Clonmel to find out about new methods of growing apple trees. The ‘fruit wall’ he visits there is similar to a vineyard and contains ten times as many trees per acre as the traditional orchard. Neven enjoys his first taste of cider and learns how successful Irish cider has become in the UK.

‘Home Chef’ series three, will see Neven visiting the people and companies behind some of Ireland’s most popular food brands including, Myrtle Allen, founder of Ballymaloe; Patrick Bewley, grandson of the man who founded Bewleys Cafe in 1937; John Dunne, chief cheese taster at Kilmeaden’s in Kilkenny; Denis Daly, the chief blender of Barry’s Tea in Cork and ‘Mr. Tayto’ Ray Coyle at Tayto Park in Meath.

Neven will use this famous Irish produce in a selection of his delicious recipes, filmed both in his home and on location. Many of these dishes have been inspired by the menus of Neven’s multiple award-winning, MacNean House and Restaurant in Blacklion, Co. Cavan.

“There is one thought that continually struck me when I travelled around Ireland to film this new series – there has never been a better time to be a chef in Ireland,” said Neven.

“As well as supporting local producers, the starting point for any good meal is great ingredients and the quality of our produce and pride in our food traditions is second to none.

“As people become more aware of what they are eating and where it is from, we are so lucky that we have the best fish, meat, game and grain and our dairy produce is among the world’s finest. This has been a great series to highlight the extraordinary work of Ireland’s food businesses, many passing through generations, and all focussed on providing the best Irish produce.”

Neven has also released his new cookbook ‘Neven’s Country Living’ volume two, in association with the Irish Farmers Journal. This book features a selection of Neven’s most popular recipes from simple starters, family lunches, hearty dinners to delectable desserts.

From cooking alongside his mum, Vera, from the age of 12, to becoming owner and head chef of one of Ireland’s top restaurants, Neven learned in craft in some of Europe’s top Michelin starred restaurants including Arzac restaurant, San Sebastian (three stars), The Grand Hotel Restaurant, Berlin (two stars) and Lea Linster Restaurant in Luxembourg (two stars).

Since then, Neven has won many awards both for his entrepreneurial skills and expertise and creativity in the kitchen.

Even in these challenging times, bookings are made months in advance for weekend reservations at MacNean House and Restaurant. Neven is proud to have helped put Blacklion on the map and employs over 40 staff.
