THE CORONAS AT O'KEEFFES

Monika Gaciarz's Review

Any night in O'Keeffes, is a guaranteed success but it is twice as good when there is live music to be enjoyed. You haven't seen a proper live performance, if you haven't yet seen The Coronas. They are a real diamond in the Irish music industry, and their pure talent is easily noticed when they do what they do best, which is playing gigs and interacting with the crowd. The Dublin band proved it once again, when they played in O'Keeffes in Clonmel on the 26th of August. Their support band, Crow Black Chickens didn't disappoint and Danny O'Reilly (the lead singer of the Coronas) was truly impressed as he repeatedly thanked them on stage for their contribution to this wonderful night. As the most hardcore Coronas fans (unsurprisingly mostly women!) filled the space close to the stage, which is probably better known as the 'pit' for those attending rock concerts, the excitement was palpable. However, the band did not keep us waiting for a long time, which was a relief. They appeared on the stage dressed in t-shirts and fashionably frayed jeans. They clicked with the audience straight away as they did not build any imaginary 'barrier' between themselves and those who came to watch them. One thing that struck me the most was the genuine smile on their faces. It was evident that they love what they are doing and there is nowhere they'd rather be (as they sing in one of their songs, Heroes or Ghosts). They were exploding with energy and they passed it onto the crowd, who must have been the loudest and the most enthusiastic audience The Coronas have ever seen. The band admitted, that it was their first time playing in Tipperary, and after such a reception, I am certain that they will be back for more! The venue itself was perfect for such a gig as the band were in close proximity to everybody present, whether they were sipping on a drink at the bar, or right by the stage. I had the pleasure of being as close to the stage as possible, so the impact of the gig was even greater. One of the highlights of this gig was of course during their song 'San Diego' which has become the anthem of all pubs in Ireland and maybe even abroad. Everybody sang the words of the chorus at the top of their lungs. The floor was vibrating with each pull of the string on the bass guitar played by Graham Knox. Their sound was just mesmerizing, and it was a real pleasure to listen to. However, if that didn't convince you, let me tell you that they are even better in private! After the gig, I spoke with their manager Jim, who made it possible for me to meet them. I'd like to say thanks to Fergal O'Keeffe as well, as he allowed me up to their hotel room for a little chat and a photo (I think I just might have made myself a few more enemies!). Danny, Graham, Conor Egan (drums) and Dave McPhillips (lead guitar) made me feel completely at ease, as they welcomed me into their private space. To be quite honest, I felt as if I was catching up with some old school friends, not talking to such a talented group of people. They were more than delighted to sign my cd, give me autographs and pose for a picture. What is their secret dare you ask? Well, it seems to me that friendship is the foundation of all success. The Coronas are not only a band, they are first of all good friends, and that makes a huge difference. There's not much more to add to describe this remarkable evening. I'll put it this way, if you have seen The Coronas already, you know what I am talking about, if you haven't, there is only one way to find out!

Tom Climent Exhibition

South Tipperary Arts Centre Saturday September 4th at 2pm

Tom Climents most recent works are more architectural than previous ones, they still contain the elusive abstract qualities which has characterised his work in recent years, but the architectural elements give the paintings a more grounded narrative. They are an amalgamation of structures , deconstructed and assembled together. There is a desire to impose order and clarity on the abstraction in previous works which has led to a more focused image in many of the pieces. The works can declare a dramatic physicality while conversely appear to be quite subtle.

His work has essentially been within the European tradition of painting, which is a "visual" one, concerned with picture space and the relations which obtain between the real world of three dimensions and the essentially illusory two dimensional world of the canvas. This idea of creating space on a two dimensional surface has always been important to him , the conflict between representation and abstraction as a means of doing this has been prevalent, there exists a push and pull between these two elements.

Previous solo shows include ones in The Hunt Museum , The Fenton Gallery, The Temple Bar Gallery & Studios, Garter Lane Arts Centre, Kevin Kavanagh Gallery , Triskel Arts Centre and The Alley Theatre Arts Centre.

He is a recipient of the Tony O'Malley award and Victor Treacey award.

His work is in the collections of The Central Bank, UCC, AIB Bank, The National Self-Portrait Collection, NCB Stockbrokers , The Opera House, Cork City Council and The Office of Public Works.

As well as his upcoming solo show in the South Tipperary Arts Centre this year and the Linenhall Arts Centre in 2011.He will also be exhibiting in the Art Fairs, Art London, Art Chicago and Art Toronto during the year.
